October 2019 – Newsletter

The month of October was jam packed with events, from Diwali to Halloween – so naturally the EnE calendar was brimming with activities too. Our volunteers at EnE, together logged in 310 hours of volunteering this month!

We want to share an important news that Mahima Goel, Cancer Clinical Research Coordinator at Stanford
University’s Radiology Department, will make more STEM opportunities available for the EnE volunteers.
With a BS degree in Molecular Biology & Psychology from UIUC and an MS in Biomedical Engineering from UCSF, Mahima will also mentor and guide the students aspiring to pursue a career in medicine.

As we head into the official month of giving, we have ample opportunities for our volunteers to give back to
our community and make a positive impact, such as the Salvation Army Toy Barrel and Giving Tree Prep and Greeting Card Workshop for Veterans to name a few.

A few important reminders before we dive into this month’s activities:

  • Approve volunteer hours for seniors: In addition to Ayesha, the following can approve your volunteer hours for submission to schools and: Cecilia (San Jose, close to EVHS), Kavitha (San Jose, close to EV Square), Pallabi (San Jose, Country Club), Namrita Grover (Cupertino), and Geeta Hiremath (Fremont)
  • Changed timings for Jeena volunteers: Henceforth the volunteering sessions will be from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm

Now for a Sneak Peek into Our October 2019 Activities:

Community Activities

  • Healthcare Opportunities Discussion: Mahima Goel, Cancer Clinical Research Coordinator at Stanford University’s Radiology Department met with interested volunteers to provide guidance on healthcare opportunities.
  • Cook and serve at JW House: Cooked an amazing dinner for families undergoing medical crisis.
  • Appreciation for 2019 Annual Clothing Donation Drive participants:Received certificates for our volunteers from Empowering World Change 15th Annual Clothing Donation Drive. These certificates will be handed to volunteers during our annual day.
  • Martial Cottle Fall Festival 2019: Led various activities including cattle corral, kids crafts, carnival games, pumpkin patch attendant, farm tours, truck/tractor area, face painting attendant and monitoring parking lots. Way to go!
  • Unveiling of Meditation Garden & Tea ceremony at JW House: Attended the opening ceremony for the Meditation Garden at JW house. It was very satisfying to see weeks of hard work pay off!
  • Bliss Box Birthday Giving Project: Collected bliss boxes with birthday supplies for low-income families to help celebrate their kids’ birthdays.
  • Hip Hop Dance: Successfully finished dance class sessions for the community at the Evergreen Valley Branch Library. Stay tuned for news on future sessions!

Serving at Shelters

  • Birthday Helpers for Homeless at Salvation Army: Helped with cake-cutting to celebrate birthdays of homeless children. Way to go!
  • TX-Serving Meals to Needy: Made food bags at the Dallas, TX food pantry. Keep up the good work!
  • CityTeam Shelter-KITCHEN: Cooked and served dinner at a homeless shelter.
  • Community Services at CT:  Helped organize the pantry and made food bags at a homeless shelter! We are so proud of our volunteers!
  • Volunteer with Sunday Friends: Led activities for children from low-income families such as cooking, making crafts, reading to children etc. Kudos to our volunteers!
  • Meal Sponsorships to AshaJyothi, Shelter for Special Needs Kids: A BIG thank you to Shivi Fotedar, Alpa Kohli, Devashree Bhau, Satya Anumolu, Namrita Grover, Nisha Charagulla, Vasu Madhav, Priya GunduRao, Nidhi Sharma for sponsoring meals during October.

Our Special Friends and Beloved Seniors

  • Friends Together-Surya and Friends Together-Infuse:Our volunteers are making g a positive impact by spending quality time with their special needs friends. A special shout out to Trisha for her amazing commitment to her special buddy. Keep up the great work!
  • Jeena Academics Program: Helped kids with developmental challenges on their reading, writing and math. For more information on Jeena, go to: https://www.jeena.org/events/2019/jun/03/read-write-math-all-while-having-fun/
  • Laundry Helpers:Did an amazing job at Priya Living Retirement Community. The seniors truly appreciate our volunteers. A special shout-out to Arun who is there every weekend unfailingly!
  • Music for Seniors (led by Tanisha Tol): Put on an awesome show at the music recital by playing the piano, violin, and sitar!
  • Tech Sessions: Helped seniors with their tech devices.
